French Coffee Roasting Championship

The French Coffee Roasting Championship (Championnat de France de Torréfaction) is France’s national roasting competition, organized by SCA France in partnership with Collectif café (formally the Comité Français du Café, the country’s main coffee trade federation, founded 1958). Running since 2017, it’s held annually at the Paris Coffee Show.

How the Competition Works

Competitors work with the same imposed green coffee lots rather than their own beans, judged across three stages: evaluating and classifying the green coffee, developing a roast profile suited to it, and the quality of the final roasted cup. The competitor with the best combined score earns the title Meilleur Torréfacteur de France (Best Roaster of France) and represents France at the World Coffee Roasting Championship.

France has a strong recent record in the world competition: Mikaël Portannier won the 2025 World Coffee Roasting Championship for France. The following year’s French champion, Jonathan Le Pautremat, represented France at the 2026 World Coffee Roasting Championship in Brussels, won by Belgium’s Benjamin Brassart.
